A rideshare rental pickup checklist helps you catch missing documents and vehicle issues before your first trip. Confirm the appointment, inspect the car and make sure the vehicle appears correctly in the app you plan to use. Take the time to record what you receive rather than relying on a verbal handover.
Before your appointment
Ask the provider for its exact document and payment requirements. Lyft’s official pickup guidance tells Express Drive renters to bring their driver’s license, a credit or debit card in their name and a phone with the Lyft Driver app installed. Other providers may have different requirements, so check your reservation rather than assuming the same list applies everywhere.
- Appointment confirmation and pickup address.
- Current driver’s license and the requested payment method.
- Charged phone, relevant driver apps and a charging cable.
- Reservation details and copies of the written quote.
- Provider contact details and the documents it specifically requested.
Read the agreement and ask about unclear terms
Check the rental period, payment schedule, deposit, mileage plan, authorized drivers and permitted commercial use. Confirm which apps you intend to use. Ask about renewal, maintenance, cancellation and return rules before signing. If something differs from the quote, resolve it with the provider before taking the vehicle.
Keep a copy of the agreement and any written clarifications. Do not assume an employee’s quick verbal explanation replaces the agreement. Our weekly rental cost checklist can help you identify the charges worth confirming.
Document the vehicle’s condition
Walk around the vehicle with the provider and photograph existing scratches, dents, wheel damage and interior marks. Record the odometer and fuel or battery level. Ask the provider to note existing damage on the pickup record. Save those records somewhere you can access when returning the car.
- Look at tires, glass, lights and mirrors.
- Check that doors and seat belts operate normally.
- Confirm the car is clean and any supplied accessories are present.
- Look for warning lights and report unusual sounds or obvious problems.
- Ask how to report a problem discovered shortly after pickup.
This is a handover checklist, not a mechanical inspection. If the car appears unsafe, raise the issue with the provider and arrange a resolution before driving away.
Confirm the exact vehicle is ready in your app
Match the plate, vehicle details and required documents against your driver profile. Uber’s rental FAQ says rentals outside its approved marketplace can require additional document uploads and are not guaranteed to be eligible. Do not start taking trips in a vehicle that has not completed the platform’s approval process.
If a document is missing or the car is not shown correctly, ask who needs to fix it and when. Keep the provider’s support contact separate from the platform’s support contact; the right person depends on whether the issue concerns the car, the agreement or the app.
Know the plan for problems and returns
- Where do I take the car for routine maintenance?
- Who do I contact for a breakdown or an incident?
- Is a replacement vehicle available, and under what conditions?
- Where and when must I return it?
- What fuel, charging and cleanliness standard applies at return?
For an electric vehicle, also confirm how charging works, whether any equipment or account is supplied and what charge level is required at return. Plan your first charging stop before leaving the pickup location.
After pickup
Store your agreement, condition photos and support information together. Keep a record of rental charges and operating expenses from the first day. Revisit your budget after the first week instead of assuming your original estimates were accurate.
